Forest fires: Onemi continues to monitor the red alert in Viña del Mar and Santo Domingo


The National Emergency Office (Onemi) has carried out an assessment of the forest fires recorded in the Valparaíso region.

According to information provided by the National Forestry Corporation (Conaf), forest fire fighting is still underway in the Nueva Esperanza sector of Viña del Mar, where the flames have already consumed 111 hectares.

Regarding the affect from this fire, community teams remain in the field assessing the affect to people and damage to homes in the sector, so the information can be updated throughout the day. Up to the close of this note, two deaths, 67 injuries, 42 sheltered homes, and 270 homes damaged were reported.

“The level of damage to these homes will be confirmed when the revocation of the basic emergency files (FIBE) ends,” Onemi said.

Regarding connectivity, the Route 60 CH Agua Santa variant, up to Álvarez street, has been restored for all types of vehicles.

In view of this context, the regional presidential delegation of Valparaíso, based on technical information from Conaf and in coordination with the ONEMI regional directorate, maintains the red alert for the municipality of Viña del Mar due to forest fires, currently in force from December. 22.

Yesterday, December 23, President Gabriel Boric visited the place together with the ministers of the Interior, of Agriculture and of Social Development and of the Family; the Regional Presidential Delegate: Mayor of Viña del Mar; and the Onemi Valparaíso team led by the regional director.

According to the Supreme Decree 367, the State of Constitutional Exception of Catastrophe for Public Calamity has been declared for the municipality of Viña del Mar.

During 22 December, 4 SAE messages were sent to reinforce the evacuation of the sectors of Tranque Sur, Puerto Montt, Puerto Aysén, Cabritera, Forestal Alto and Camp Felipe Camiroaga.

The municipality of Viña del Mar manages the Colegio de República del Ecuador, located at Calle Etchervers n° 115, as a collection center. In addition, the municipality maintains the following shelters available:

  • Guillermo Rivera High School, located on Calle Álvarez N°708, with a capacity of 100 people, of which 7 are housed.
  • Hotel O’Higgins, located in Plaza Sucre, with capacity for 120 people, where 35 people stayed overnight.

In addition, if necessary, the following schools are available as shelters: Colegio República de Colombia, located at 10 Norte N°985, with capacity for 100 people; and the Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna school, located in Juan José Latorre N°297, with a capacity of 100 people.

Since the beginning of this emergency, two National Committees for the Management of Disaster Risks (COGRID) have been set up, chaired by the Undersecretary of the Interior. Likewise, at the regional level, 2 regional COGRIDs were convened, led by the Regional Presidential Delegate of Valparaíso and the Minister of the Interior.

In the early hours of today Conaf personnel, with the support of the Fire Brigade, operated at night with a brigade, finishing hot spots and reinforcing the containment lines with cutting and scraping tools. Likewise, around 06:40, some outbreaks were detected within the burned area, which are in combat activity by the Viña del Mar firefighters, with no danger of spreading in the Amphitheater sector of Fifth Vergara.

For this day, CONAF has organized the planning of the work with 1 technician, 1 security officer, 2 helicopters and 1 command post, together with the Viña del Mar firefighters. In addition, Onemi maintains the support of 4 helicopters to fight the ‘fire.

Finally, the interregional support efforts of the Fire Brigade of the Metropolitan Region, Chilean Navy personnel (UFAR) and Chilean Army personnel (UFE) continue.

Santo Domingo

According to information provided by the National Forestry Corporation (Conaf), in relation to the forest fire that occurred in the municipality of Santo Domingo, Onemi reported that the fire is also being fought at the San Enrique Hacienda which consumed about 150 hectares. .

In the past day, Conaf worked on the construction of the control lines, as well as preventing the advance of the fire with cutting and scraping tools, supported by aerial resources and the water lines of the fire brigade.

In view of this context, the regional presidential delegation of Valparaíso, based on technical information from CONAF and in coordination with the ONEMI regional directorate, maintains the red alert for the municipality of Santo Domingo, due to forest fires, currently in force . December 23 and “as long as the conditions of the fire justify it”.

Yesterday, 23 December, 5 brigades, 1 command post, 2 aircraft and 4 CONAF helicopters operated; together with the firefighters of Santo Domingo, Cartagena, El Tabo, San Antonio, Algarrobo, Pupuya and Rapel; plus 1 tank truck, 1 fuel truck and Chilean Army personnel; with the support of the Carabineros, municipal staff and the Provincial Presidential Delegate of San Antonio.

While 2 CONAF brigades remain in place during the night, together with the San Antonio and Algarrobo firefighters.

On the other hand, a shelter has been set up in the offices of the San Enrique Neighborhood Council, to be used in case of need and to support the work of feeding personnel engaged in the fight against forest fires.
