After fireworks show is cancelled, Mayors Sharp and Ripamonti announce lawsuit against fireworks suppliers

After the decision of the General Directorate of National Mobilization (DGMN) not to authorize the New Year’s fireworks display, and after the summoning of the deputies of the UDI, the mayors of Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, Jorge Sharp and Macarena Ripamonti, announced legal actions against the companies Pirotecnia Spa and Piromax Fx Spa, suppliers of the fireworks which had an expiry date of three years, when the DGMN considers up to two years to be used.

Sharing the indignation and unease that this decision generates in the world of tourism entrepreneurs, Mayor Sharp said he expected “absolute transparency” regarding the reasoning for the DGMN’s decision which, in his opinion, obviously generates “an offense , damage, to the local economy, to tourism and also to the city of Valparaíso.”

And in addition to indicating the suppliers of the fireworks, the head of the Valparaíso community also accused the Ministry of Defense led by Maya Fernández and the Undersecretary of the Armed Forces Galo Eidelstein, of failing to respond to two letters requesting tests to evaluate the state of the pyrotechnic devices. “There is even a minute circulating from the DGMN realizing that these events were fabricated by the government during the month of November, but that neither the municipality of Viña del Mar nor the municipality of Valparaíso have been informed,” he said. hurled Jorge Sharp. .

For the mayor of Valparaíso, “this situation should have been resolved in early December, or even when the relevant bodies became aware of these facts, because strictly speaking, denouncing this two days after the party left the city with no leeway for action, and what we most requested is that if the fires that were to be reviewed were turned back for any reason, they inform us in good time so that, somehow, as a city, we can react to a decision which was taken two or three days leaves us in a series of difficulties”, criticized.

For his part, the municipal administrator of Viña del Mar, Macarena Ripamonti, has declared that he will abide by the decision of the DGMN, but that he will take all possible actions to sanction the supplier of the fireworks and condemn the municipality of Viña del Mar plywood. “The balance is that people’s safety and integrity are above everything else,” she said.

Mayor Ripamonti ruled that the municipality has hired a show that believes that everything is in good condition “and here the supplier was not only negligent, but hid it to win a public tender.”

Ripamonti was emphatic in underlining that the supervisory body is the DGMN and that in the Municipality “we do not have the equipment to carry out a tactical or technical investigation, nor do we have the ability to test fireworks individually”.

The UDI deputies accuse the mayors Sharp and Ripamonti of “ineffectiveness” for the suspension of the fireworks and summon them to assume their responsibilities for the impact on tourism

The Udi deputies who make up the Culture and Economy and Tourism commissions of the lower house, respectively Gustavo Benavente and Flor Weisse, have invited the mayors Sharp and Ripamonti to “assume their direct responsibility” in the suspension of the traditional fireworks display in Valparaiso and Vina of the Sea.

The union MPs referred to the statements made in recent days by the director general of the DGMN, General Patricio Carrillo, who told several press outlets that the company in charge of the demonstration “knew since December last year that its elements had expired . ”, adding that “it is not that now we have noticed and noticed it” and that, moreover, the role of the municipalities of Valparaíso and Viña del Mar was precisely “to hold the tenders and make sure that the companies are in order”. .

For this reason, both deputies assured that “here there is a clear responsibility on the part of both mayors, as the highest authority of each municipality, because during the tender they were unable to certify that the fireworks of the The requesting company had expired.” , and just a week before the new year they began to worry about this situation.

“The serious impact on tourism in Valparaíso and Viña del Mar that the suspension of the fireworks will cause will be the sole and exclusive responsibility of Mayors Sharp and Ripamonti, for not acting diligently when appropriate. Here are millionaire investments and months of work made by the different tourism actors of the Fifth Region, who have experienced a terrible period during the three years due to the social outbreak and the pandemic, and who have seen this opportunity as a way to build their businesses ”, questioned Benavente and Weisse.

In this line, the Udi parliamentarians reiterated that “the ineffectiveness with which both mayors acted was highlighted”, insisting on the fact that “they had the whole year to monitor this situation and look for an alternative yet they didn’t.” , seriously damaging hoteliers, gastronomic entrepreneurs and all the people who depend on tourism in the region”.

Finally, Benavente and Weisse announced that they will summon the mayors of Valparaíso and Viña del Mar to the Economy and Tourism Commission of the lower house, as well as representatives of tourism in the area, in order to quantify the economic damage that the decision dictates, stating that “there we hope the authorities take responsibility for this gross negligence.”

As for the repercussions of this decision on the tourism sector concerned, Sharp said that industry organizations have been convened for a meeting on Friday to discuss courses of action in the current scenario. In this sense, he stressed that, also this Friday, a light show will be signaled in some points of the port city to celebrate the arrival of 2023.
