The latest report released this Thursday by the ombudsman’s office confirmed the death of a 16-year-old teenager in Juliaca, a town in the Puno region, who – according to various media – was injured by a bullet in the head last Monday, the day on which 17 protesters died.

In this way, so far, 41 demonstrators have died in direct clashes with the police, as well as a policeman, while seven other people have lost their lives “due to road accidents and events related to the blockade”, specifies the organization .

The Ombudsman also said he has verified that 17 National Police officers remain hospitalized in Puno after being injured in the clashes, one of whom is in the trauma unit and four others in the operating theatre.

The health authorities transferred four people who were injured during the protests in Juliaca to an air force plane from Puno to Lima on Thursday. These included three men, aged 21, 23 and 36, who suffered eye trauma and another, 37, with a fractured right frontal bone of the skull.

The Regional Health Directorate of Puno (DIRESA) added that the transfer to Lima of two other patients who are hospitalized in the Regional Hospital and in the Juliaca Hospital is also being coordinated.

The ombudsman’s office recommended this Thursday to the Public Prosecutor that the expert reports “on the tragic events that occurred in Juliaca, Puno, be investigated by prosecutors specialized in human rights and interculturalism”.

“Given the seriousness of the effects on life, integrity and health, the aforementioned prosecutions would be the ideal ones to continue the investigation, as is the case in Ayacucho and ApurĂ­mac”, added the institution.

Local media said that a “tense calm” was being maintained in Juliaca and that groups of people were preparing for the funerals of some of the victims, while pickets were also formed, although no new incidents with the security forces were reported. safety. . The groups of protesters are demanding the resignation of President Dina Boluarte, the closing of the Congress, the bringing forward of the general elections to 2023 and the convening of a constituent assembly.
